Minimum Requirements

The following are the minimum requirements for a student before acceptance into the Professional Tractor-Trailer Driver Training Course is granted.

  • Age 18 years and over. See note below.
  • Hold valid Ontario Class "G" or higher driver's licence, accompanied by a driver's abstract.
  • Minimum two years driving experience.
  • Grade 10 education or equivalent.
  • Participate in a pre-enrollment interview.

NOTE: Prospective students are strongly cautioned regarding the following:

While the Northern Academy will accept students 18 years of age and older, many transportation companies have insurance policies that require their drivers to be 21 and over. As part of your preparation for enrollment, please check with prospective employers in your area regarding their policies.


After successful completion of the interview and before beginning the 6 week program, students must complete the following:

       Based upon Ministry of Transport of Ontario requirements, the applying students must:

  • Provide a satisfactory medical certificate in accordance with MTO regulations.
  • Meet vision standards
  • Pass a written test based on operating knowledge of a tractor-trailer *

    * We suggest writing your "C" class at the same time to avoid additional cost.

  • Obtain a current statement of driving record (abstract) (We recommend a maximum of 5 or less accumulated demerit points)
  • Request a Criminal Records Search from your local police department, allow 2 weeks for processing.
